October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

With support from partners like you, exciting advancements are being made in the fight to save lives!

One example is the work of Claudine Isaacs, M.D., professor of medicine and oncology and Associate Director of Clinical Research at Georgetown Lombardi. Dr. Isaacs’ team recently collaborated on a clinical trial for a new breast cancer treatment that shows great promise for women with triple-negative breast cancer.

A pill called LynparzaTM was at the heart of the clinical trial. And the bottom line is that more women who received the active drug lived longer without the disease. “This finding represents a significant step forward and changes how we treat women with this type of cancer,” says Dr. Isaacs. “More is yet to come from this class of drugs.”

“Philanthropy has an incredible impact. It really allows people to take on those ideas and get the funding to be able to take them to the next step.” — Claudine Isaacs, M.D., Associate Director of Clinical Research

Commemorating 50 Years
of the National Cancer Act

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the National Cancer Act of 1971. Themed “Nothing Will Stop Us,” the year-long celebration commemorates the landmark piece of legislation that forever changed cancer care and our pursuit of cures.

The signing of the National Cancer Act of 1971 marked the beginning of a national commitment to eradicate cancer and led to the creation of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) Cancer Centers Program, which has become an anchor of the nation’s cancer research effort.

Georgetown Lombardi is proud to be the only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in the Washington, D.C. metro area, meeting the highest standards in research, treatment, prevention, and education.
