McDonough School of Business Impact Report Fall 2019

Dear Alumni and Friends,

This has been another stellar year for the MBA program, and our recent ranking as #1 for having the best-trained MBAs in the world (according to recruiters responding to the Bloomberg Businessweek ranking survey) is indicative of how our entire MBA community continues to enhance the program. Bloomberg also ranked our full-time MBA 20th in the United States and 21st in the world, adding to our position as 17th in the United States and 29th in the world in the Financial Times, and 24th in the U.S. News & World Report ranking, which also listed the evening program 12th. This progress is a great testament to the program’s growing reputation—one that you helped establish.

During my time as the senior associate dean of MBA programs, one of my top priorities has been to increase our MBA scholarship support. Thanks to support from our alumni, parents, and friends, we were able to provide competitive scholarship assistance to our full-time MBA students with an average of $21,000 awarded per student in the 2019 application year. This is especially significant because, with your generosity, we were able to provide 45 percent of the full-time MBA students some form of scholarship assistance, a significant increase over the 34 percent of students we supported last year.

Increasing our scholarships helps attract the best and brightest candidates who can graduate with both the tools and mindsets needed to help the business world address society’s most complex issues. We will continue to offer an education as only Georgetown can—by leveraging our global network of alumni and business leaders, providing the access that only a global capital like Washington, D.C. can offer, and sustaining our Jesuit tradition of serving the common good.

Thank you for your generosity and support as we build upon the excellence of a Georgetown MBA and help our students realize their potential. We are deeply grateful.

Sincerely,

Prashant Malaviya
Senior Associate Dean of MBA Programs

With Gratitude

While working at Xerox in their Corporate Strategy, Finance Services, and Finance departments, I decided to go back to school for a more general background in business. I was drawn to Georgetown by its global emphasis, including the International Business and Diplomacy certificate through the School of Foreign Service, and strong community, and ultimately only applied to McDonough.

Not unexpectedly, one of the most unique aspects of the Georgetown experience was the Global Business Experience. It allowed me to apply what we had learned in the classroom to a real-life client experience. The fact that Georgetown has had the GBE for years showed in how established the program was, how many clients were repeat participants in the program, and how the top-quality professors guided the experience.

I especially appreciated the emphasis the program put on principled leadership rather than profit-maximization. The cases we had challenged us to evaluate the “why” in our goals and actions. I believe it is a valuable attribute to have in any established organization, and it is important for me to work for a mission-based organization that lives out its mission in the same way Georgetown does.

Potential students are also excited about these core aspects of a Georgetown MBA, but they also need a little encouragement. While at McDonough, I was involved as an Admissions Student Ambassador. When I had informational sessions or interviewed applicants, a common reservation was whether other schools might provide more financial aid than Georgetown. Now on the other side, I am so thankful for the gifts I have received, and I look to give back in the future with the hopes that other students have as good or an even better McDonough experience.
