The New Medical/Surgical Pavilion

Partnering to heal, teach, serve, and discover

The long-standing partnership between Georgetown University and MedStar Health brings together MedStar Georgetown University Hospital with Georgetown’s School of Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Health, Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center, Biomedical Graduate Education, and Biomedical Research programs. Together, we train the next generation of providers and scientists—and bring innovative therapies from the laboratory to the patient bedside.

And now, with the construction of a new medical/surgical pavilion, we are working jointly to develop a world-class facility that will transform the way we deliver personalized care, deploy new technologies, and meet the needs of families across our region and beyond.

A footprint that will let us flourish

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital has become a national and international destination—more and more patients entrust us with their care. But our facility is aging. It’s time to modernize.

We have developed ambitious plans for a facility that will meet our needs today, tomorrow, and well into the future. Slated for completion in 2022, the estimated 477,000-square-foot medical/surgical pavilion will house:

  • 56 private patient rooms
  • 32 state-of-the-art operating rooms, including a new intraoperative MRI suite
  • A new emergency department with 33 private rooms
  • A rooftop helipad with direct access to the emergency department and operating rooms
  • Three levels of underground parking

It will provide the optimal surgical and clinical environment to integrate the latest medical and technological advances—and to attract the best students, researchers, physicians, and nurses. Expanding our footprint, meanwhile, will allow us to enhance our presence as a leader in cancer, transplant, orthopaedics, neurosciences, and surgical disciplines.

Designing the future of patient care

In the spirit of cura personalis—care of the whole person—Georgetown University Medical Center is committed to providing the best possible experience for patients and their loved ones, as well as for our clinicians, researchers, and students.

  • Creating a healing environment

The pavilion design reflects guidance from our providers and community members. Natural light and water elements will help create a warm, soothing environment that reduces patient anxiety, and the project will nearly double the amount of surrounding green space.

  • Strengthening world-class specialty and surgical care

The new pavilion will advance MedStar Georgetown University Hospital’s world-renowned expertise across a number of services and specialties. General surgery, oncology, and gastroenterology are just a few of the services that will benefit from the pavilion’s new surgical floors.

  • Advancing the treatment and care of neurological disorders

Georgetown University Medical Center is a leader in researching and treating Parkinson’s disease, as well as other neurological disorders and complex conditions related to the spine and back. In the new pavilion, we will treat patients across the spectrum of neurodegenerative disorders, providing highly specialized care.

  • Elevating the transplant experience

One of the largest of its kind, the MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute gives patients suffering from organ failure rare access to a range of pioneering transplant options. In the new pavilion, we will elevate our multidisciplinary transplant care with ORs featuring transplant-specific technology, a 12-bed transplant ICU, and a 30-room intermediate care unit.

  • Enhancing training and research for a healthier tomorrow

Georgetown University is dedicated to innovative health education and discovery, building skills through hands-on experience. We educate a diverse student body to become knowledgeable, ethical, and compassionate physicians, clinicians, scientists, policy makers, and leaders. The new pavilion will be essential in attracting talent—and in bringing discoveries to the patient bedside.

  • Maximizing emergency care and community benefit

We continue to work alongside the community to meet the needs of our patients, our hospital, and our neighbors. The medical/surgical pavilion will be a pioneering investment in the urgent, essential work of improving emergency care in Washington, D.C. The new pavilion will approximately double the size of our ED, from 14,000 to 27,000 square feet, expanding our ability to provide lifesaving trauma and emergency care when every minute counts.

Investing in the future of medical excellence

The successful completion of this new medical/surgical pavilion will require partnerships with philanthropic investors who share our ambitious vision.
