In gratitude to President Emeritus John J. DeGioia

Throughout his four decades of service—including his tenure as Georgetown’s 48th president from 2001-24—John J. DeGioia (C’79, Ph.D.’95) was deeply engaged in Georgetown’s mission of student formation, academic inquiry, and service to the common good, all pursued in the spirit of Georgetown’s Catholic and Jesuit tradition.

His vision for Georgetown, and the values that infused his leadership, shaped the Called to Be campaign, inviting members of the university community to consider the role they could play in this shared calling to expand Georgetown’s impact.

“Through this campaign, we remind ourselves of who we are called to be—as members of this community—and we put that calling into action.”

— President Emeritus John J. DeGioia, at the launch of the Called to Be campaign in 2023

Honoring DeGioia’s legacy

In November 2024, DeGioia announced he was stepping down from his role as university president, becoming President Emeritus as he continued to recover from a stroke.

To honor his tenure as the longest-serving president in the university’s history, Georgetown launched the John J. DeGioia Fund in support of three projects that carry on DeGioia’s legacy: renaming a need-based scholarship program DeGioia established; launching a new symposium focusing on intellectual, ethical, and spiritual leadership in the context of higher education; and renaming Georgetown’s Old North and New North buildings as part of a unified home for the humanities on campus.

Help continue the work that President Emeritus DeGioia started

We invite our community to consider honoring President Emeritus DeGioia with a gift to the DeGioia Fund.
