Title:Idol Family Fellowship enables rising senior Sofía Abreu and others to complete virtual internships during pandemic

An international political economy major, Sofía Abreu (SFS’21) is getting ready to start her final year at Georgetown’s School of Foreign Service. Like most rising seniors, she is thinking about building her skill set for the job market.

As a first-generation immigrant from Venezuela, she is interested in the intersectionality of international affairs, global markets, and economic development, particularly in Latin America and the Caribbean. For the past couple months, the Idol Family Fellowship enabled her to do remote work as a debt and fiscal governance intern at the Emerging Markets Investors Alliance, a nonprofit headquartered in New York.

Abreu also served as the co-student director for this year’s Fellows, all of whom were completing their internships virtually. The Fellows stayed connected through weekly zoom chats and other special programming designed for young professionals, including financial fluency and public speaking.

Stipends provided by the fellowship made it possible for Abreu and her peers to accept full-time unpaid internships. The program had to make special adaptations this year when the pandemic hit.
