Lauinger Library

For more than fifty years, the Joseph Mark Lauinger (C’67) Memorial Library has served as a treasured home for all Georgetown students during their time on the Hilltop, and as a place of lifelong learning for Georgetown alumni.

As the nature of research and collaboration at universities evolves, our central academic spaces must similarly adapt. Today, the modern academy is called to bring together interdisciplinary, problem-oriented teams working to address the world’s most pressing challenges. We are called to ensure our physical spaces fuel scholarship in service to the world.

An evolving Lauinger Library

A reimagined Lauinger Library will serve as a 21st century hub of inquiry, teamwork, and creation, bringing students and faculty together to explore rigorous research questions and showcase new knowledge.

Planned in phases, beginning with the main floor and present-day Pierce Reading Room, Lauinger Library’s comprehensive renovation will open up the library physically and functionally. Initial concepts include the use of glass and open floor plans to bring more light into the library—taking advantage of its position adjacent to the Potomac to offer improved views of Georgetown’s surrounding landscape. By prioritizing flexible, technology-enhanced learning spaces and expanded maker spaces, Lauinger will become a more active home for intellectual inquiry.
