Georgetown University Medical Center

For nearly 200 years, Georgetown University Medical Center (GUMC) has been guided by a mission to serve our communities in the spirit of cura personalis, or care of the whole person. This mission animates our work throughout every school, program, and research center.

Grounded in the university’s Catholic and Jesuit tradition, GUMC educates compassionate and skilled researchers, clinicians, and health leaders—professionals who are as committed to excellence as they are to service.

We conduct groundbreaking research, leading studies and clinical trials that accelerate the development of lifesaving therapies, interventions, and evidence-based standards of care. We bring these discoveries from the bench to the bedside in collaboration with our academic health system partner, MedStar Health, the largest integrated health system in the mid-Atlantic.

We shape policy and practice, confronting complex, intractable problems facing the most vulnerable. We work to improve health outcomes locally and globally, serving as “people for others” with compassion and cultural humility.

Donor support will ensure that we can amplify our impact, investing in student talent, faculty expertise, research, clinical excellence, community engagement, and other transformative opportunities to bring hope and health for all.

Together with our philanthropic community, we are building on GUMC’s distinctive strengths to realize strategic goals across several areas of critical importance—to our university, and to communities worldwide.

  • Cancer

At Georgetown University’s Lombardi Comprehensive Cancer Center—the only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in Washington, DC, and one of just 57 nationwide—we are building on decades of momentum. Fueled by our commitment to our community and grounded in our Jesuit values, we are investing in the education of compassionate and skilled researchers and clinicians, advancing the development of new cancer treatments, and strengthening engagement with community and clinical partners.

  • Global health

GUMC’s commitment to advancing global health reflects our values as a Jesuit institution, enabling us to develop ethically grounded global health leaders and share our expertise with compassion and humility. Our identity as a global university located in Washington, DC, further strengthens this work, attracting top experts in health security, infectious disease, health care reform, and global health policy. Uniquely positioned to drive solutions across disciplines and borders, we are responding to an increasingly complex global health landscape by preparing students to improve health outcomes in communities around the world, advancing groundbreaking research, positioning our scholars to shape policy and practice, and expanding collaborative relationships in communities worldwide.

  • Brain health

GUMC is an internationally recognized destination for advancing brain health, from the treatment of neurological conditions—such as stroke, traumatic brain injuries, and memory and movement disorders—to mental health initiatives and family support. Our scholars pioneer groundbreaking studies and clinical trials alongside a robust network of clinical and community partners, with transformative results for the medical field and patients’ lives. We seek not only to sustain our leadership in these fields but to become the very best by providing students, residents, and fellows with educational experiences grounded in our Jesuit values; catalyzing studies and clinical trials; and delivering holistic care that recognizes the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual needs of every patient and family.

“We are dedicated to advancing health, hope, and healing for all. We develop leaders who combine academic excellence and expertise with deep empathy—improving the well-being of communities near and far, rooted in our Jesuit commitment to service and the common good.”

—Norman Beauchamp, M.D. Executive Vice President, Georgetown University Medical Center Executive Dean, Georgetown University School of Medicine
