Celebration of Georgetown Women in Sport
The Georgetown University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will kick off a year of celebration in 2022 with the “Georgetown Women in Sports” campaign.
For 70 years, women have competed in intercollegiate sports on the Hilltop. Throughout the calendar year of 2022, GU will celebrate all female Hoyas that have worn the Blue & Gray. From humble beginnings to national champions, on the track, on the field, in and on the water and on the court, they have broken countless barriers and represented the University worldwide.
“From field hockey in 1952 through the addition of women’s squash in the current school year, our 14 women’s teams engage female student-athletes in the rigor and challenge of intercollegiate sports,” said Francis X. Rienzo Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed.
Throughout the year, fans can expect signature branded events, game recognitions and social media highlights honoring these women. The Department will be remembering trailblazers, saluting standouts and celebrating the many contributions of women’s sports on the Hilltop.
“In looking forward to the coming year, I recall the words of Nathalie Paramskas, our first field hockey coach and my earliest predecessor as senior woman administrator, ‘Women’s athletics has come a long way over the years and progress has not come easily, but … I can truly say that the future is bright for women’s athletics here at Georgetown,’ ” said Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for Business & Finance / SWA Sharon Brummell.
