Georgetown Athletics Women’s Allegiance

Honoring Georgetown Women in Sport of the Past
As we look at the history of women’s sports on the Hilltop we reflect on inspirational women and milestones that paved the way to where we are today. We go back to 1955 when Kathleen White of the sailing team was the first Georgetown woman to win a varsity letter. In 1960, the women’s intercollegiate sports of basketball, field hockey, gymnastics and tennis were organized under the new women’s athletic association (WAA). In 1974 the WAA took 5 teams and merged with the Department of Athletics. The department added lacrosse, rowing, and swim teams a year later. Georgetown now boasts 15 women’s sports programs, amongst the most in the nation, and more than 300 student-athletes.

Over the past 30 years, Georgetown has added many women’s teams such as soccer, lightweight rowing, golf, and softball teams – all sports with men’s counterparts. For the first time in 15 years a new sport was brought the Hilltop with the addition of women’s squash in the fall of 2021. The addition of women’s squash continues Georgetown’s long history of expanding participation opportunities for female student -athletes and invites a broad experience for the student body.

Making Strides for a Better Future
In looking towards the next 50 years of women’s sports at Georgetown the Athletic Department is seeking donor partnership to provide the resources our student-athletes need to succeed in the classroom, community, and competition through the formation of the Georgetown Athletics Women’s Allegiance. During the past seven academic years, with the exclusion of men’s basketball, over 75% of sport specific donations have been directed towards men’s programs. This alarming gap in contributions is a priority that the department is aggressively trying to address. Through this group of high level supporters we believe that we can significantly increase philanthropic support of our women’s programs.
